eThekwini Green Waste to Energy–Due Diligence with EIA

eThekwini Municipality have awarded Ecovate Pty Ltd with a 20 year contract to dispose of 40 000 tons of garden (green) waste per annum, with the possibility of expanding on the annual tonnages to other waste streams that arrive at the landfill sites in the city of Durban.

Once dried, the Project will initially convert 32,500 tons of dry garden waste (green waste) into biomass and then into electricity, at circa 18 000 MWh’s pa. estimated as 2MW site.

Electricity will be fed into the national grid and will help to alleviate the pressure on the national grid with the current energy crisis. It will reduce carbon footprint and aid the government in reaching its goals of sourcing green/sustainable energy production. The project will also help in job creation, which is a priority of the current government.
