E.ON Off Grid Solutions

Roll-out mini-grid based rural electrification Tanzania

E.ON Off Grid Solutions (“EOGS”) develops, owns and operates off-grid energy systems in rural areas in Africa. Its primary customer segments are villages and businesses without access to the main electricity grid. Technical solution is a containerized PV-Battery Hybrid-System and mini-grid for distribution and pre-paid metering (based on mobile money) with a high degree of standardization to achieve cost reductions. In the medium-term it is foreseen to extent the technology portfolio to other technologies (e.g. small wind), if economically reasonable. Specific projects were developed and designed by EOGS, while actual assembly/installation will be performed by local contractors. The business model was based on long-term asset operation and sale of electricity as well as other services.

Outcome and Impact:

During the project period 38.2 kWp of renewable generation capacity have been installed in rural villages of Tanzania. EOGS connected 617 rural households in Tanzania to local mini-grids and therefore reached the connection target.
