BRINGING AFFORDABLE AND ACCESSIBLE PAYG SOLAR TO NEGLECTED REGIONS OF UGANDA

This project brought affordable and accessible energy to neglected regions of Uganda, thus demonstrating the feasibility of conducting business in these areas. Northern districts are characterized by poor infrastructure, low income levels and low population density, which all lead to a high cost of doing business. GLP Uganda brought its SunKing range of clean energy lighting and household appliances to neglected off-grid villages and introduced PAYG infrastructure in this challenging market. EEP Africa financing de-risked GLP Uganda’s expansion and proved that PAYG solar can operate sustainably in the region as a means to catalysing commercial capital.

Outcome and Impact

The project sold 22,128 units in Uganda, bringing first-time electricity to households and improving energy access. The PAYG model provided approximately 75% of customers, mainly women, with their first access to financial credit, thus enabling financial inclusion in rural, unbanked areas. The switch from kerosene lamps lowered household costs, improved health and reduced carbon emissions.
