Solar Cold Chain Technologies

The purpose of this project was to advance the development of a commercial version of the low-cost, solar powered cold storage and dairy chilling machine from pilot stage to demonstration stage. !nspiraFarms had already developed a pilot unit in Kenya for the solar power dairy chilling machine and in Rwanda of a low-cost solar powered cold storage facility. This demonstration project produced a commercial version of the cold chain technology at an affordable price-point with good reliability. This facility in Kenya would provide a local site for the East Africa market to demonstrate the technology to potential vendors, financial service providers as well as to customers that include cooperatives and rural SMEs in the agrifood industry.

Outcome and Impact

During the project period 150 households gained improved access to off-grid clean energy. This results in annual emission reductions of 32tCo2eq. 15 direct jobs were created for women.
