Thorny Park Biogas Demonstration Plant

The project piloted a demonstration biogas plant in a partnership between Sucropower and a sugar cane farmer in the Mandini area, Northern KwaZulu-Natal. The plant processes a feedstock of dedicated Napier Grass and residue sugarcane tops and trash to produce biogas which will be used to generate electricity, fuel and fertiliser to enhance the viability of the sugarcane farming operations as well as create the opportunities for further downstream business opportunities within the local community.

 

Outcome and Impact:

The project reduced emissions by 72.53 tCO2eq annually. As a result, 10 households gained access to renewable energy and 7 direct jobs were created. 18kWe and 14kWt produced from 139m3 per day biogas Electricity – 78.8 Mwhe annually.
