EEP Investor Forum

EEP organises annually an Investor Forum for EEP funded Project Developers. The aim of the Investor Forum is to support  Project Developers in obtaining follow-on financing for their operations and scale-up. These matchmaking events have attracted a range of investors from DFIs to impact investors and purely private investors. The EEP Investor Forum has been thanked for the diversity of participating investors, the quality of projects and opening doors for more detailed discussions. Read more about the previous successful Investor Forums:

EEP Investor Forum / 14 May 2018 / Cape Town

EEP will host the next Investor Forum on Monday 14 May 2018 in Cape Town. The event will be held at Radisson RED V&A Waterfront and is exclusively open for the selected  and registered EEP project developers and investors. The programme will start at 13:00 and continue until 17:00 followed by a reception at the rooftop bar. Please see the agenda of the day.

We are expecting 15 project developers and nearly 20 investors to join the event. Please see below profiles of the participating investors.

Actis

Actis invests in late stage development utility scale clean energy generation projects (>20MW) that have secured a PPA or similar commitment. However, Actis does engage with early stage developers to provide mentoring support including introductions to sources of grant funding for early stage development costs in order to get their projects to PPA stage, after which Actis is in a position to take over remaining development costs and drive the EPC and financing processes.

EEP Catalyst

EEP Catalyst is the EEP Africa in-house blended finance investment window providing follow-on financing to select EEP projects stemming from the grant phase.  EEP Catalyst provides concessional co-financing in the form of loans and subordinated loans to catalyse and unlock new investment in EEP projects and close gaps in financing plans with targeted support. Project selection will focus on cases which can demonstrate a clear rationale for additionality, crowding-in new investors, commercial viability, development impact and sustainable business practices. Deal flow identification and structuring are led by an in-house NDF investment team.

Fieldstone

EEP countries targeted: All
prioritized clean energy technologies:  Biogas, hydro, solid biomass, solar PV, waste-to-energy, wind
Size of investment:  >$5M for lending and up to $2M for development
Source of investment: Debt, equity

Fieldstone principally acts as a financial advisor and arranger, but also engages in co-development in small scale RE projects through Fieldstone Africa Investment Resources (FAIR). Fieldstone will soon start lending to small scale RE projects (up to 25MW) through the FEI fund, anchored by AfDB and co-managed by Lions Head and Fieldstone. In terms of power generation projects, Fieldstone typically co-develops and lends to projects of 5MW and above

The Metier Sustainability Practice manages the Lereko Metier Sustainable Capital private equity fund, and allied funds, which are focused on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and water and waste management investments in sub-Saharan Africa. This fund preferentially provides financial close equity for greenfield project finance assets but would include development finance prior to financial close, as well as development support from the fund. The fund is also interested in growth capital in operating firms in all the sectors. In term of power generation projects, the fund generally finances projects with a capacity of over 5MW, however projects are selected based on their investment amount, and not their power generation capacity.

Power Africa

Power Africa’s goal is to add more than 30,000 megawatts (MW) of cleaner, more efficient electricity generation capacity and 60 million new home and business connections. Amongst others, Power Africa provides financial support to clean energy projects through de-risking investments so that public and private investors will fund the projects that drive systemic reforms.

SunFunder

Financing instruments: Short-term to medium-term debt

SunFunder is a specialist debt financing provider for beyond-the-grid solar companies and projects in emerging markets with the most extensive track record in the sector, having financed nearly 40 solar companies. Borrowers typically have at least some track record but are hindered by a lack of appropriate debt finance to scale. They include suppliers and distributors of pico and pay-as-you-go residential solar products, as well as suppliers, developers and EPC contractors for productive use, mini-grid and commercial & industrial solar systems. For larger debt requirements, SunFunder also leads and arranges other lenders into larger syndicated debt facilities.

SUNREF South Africa

SUNREF is the green finance label of the French development agency (AFD), which provides debt financing for renewable energy and energy efficiency projects through partner bank IDC. Next to concessional debt, SUNREF provides TA to assist with project development, which includes clarifying specific issues that would enable the project to advance through the IDC’s appraisal and decision-making process for financing. All projects financed under SUNREF must meet IDCs criteria for project financing.

RECP Finance Catalyst

RECP supports projects to reach bankability, assisting valuable project ideas to develop into concrete investment opportunities. RECP Finance Catalyst offers TA support for maximum of 20 days per project via online application process.

Private Financing Advisory Network (PFAN), hosted by UNIDO and REEEP, is an alliance of private-sector companies experienced in providing investment and financial advisory services to climate-friendly projects. Network members include specialist investment funds, institutional investors, and financial advisers. PFAN identifies promising clean energy projects at an early stage and provides mentoring for development of a business plan, investment pitch, and growth strategy, significantly enhancing the prospect of financial closure.

Virunga Power

Virunga Power is a developer, investor, and operator of renewable power projects and rural distribution grids. Virunga Power focuses on 1 -10 MW rural utility projects across East Africa. Rural electrification and new, grid-quality connectivity for households and businesses in the surrounding or nearby community is an essential component of the projects Virunga Power investments in. In addition to providing equity funding at financial close, and late-stage development capital prior to that, Virunga Power has a team of developers, engineers, legal, and finance professionals who can get involved in development of projects at any stage.
