Planetpellet – addressing energy poverty at low income rural and peri-urban homes in South Africa and Zambia with clean burning, low-cost wood pellet for cooking
‘Planetpellet’ is addressing energy poverty at low income rural and peri-urban homes in South Africa and Zambia with clean burning, low-cost wood pellet for cooking. It purposes to reduce greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions while simultaneously providing low-cost, basic cooking and space heating energy to low income rural/peri-urban homes – with a clean burning wood pellet stove. The main aim of the project is to develop a sustainable market for biomass / wood pellet in South Africa and Zambia, by generating a local, sustainable demand in rural and peri-urban areas.
The project entails the development of supply chain networks in both these regions, which will serve domestic stove users. Sustainable income will be generated through the sale of wood pellet, and the market creation will increase the demand for this pellet – supporting the local wood pellet industry.
