Introducing Small-scale Waste-to-Energy Technology to South Africa

The project will introduce small-scale, modular digestion technology for application in rural municipalities, businesses, hospitals, and other small-scale waste producers over South Africa. The technology is flexible, therefore suitable for African off grid applications where other technologies are not. The project aims to demonstrate to small-scale waste producers how their organic waste can power their green growth. Together with the demonstration of the technology, the partners will introduce a “business-in-a-box” concept for replication through local SMEs and entrepreneurs in rural areas. The biogas installations will improve current waste management approaches and contribute to the generation of an increased amount of renewable energy in South Africa. It will have positive impact on job creation, significantly develop local know-how, diversify the income earning possibilities of local (rural) entrepreneurs and stimulate the realisation of a green economy. The project will cooperate with various SMEs, knowledge institutions and NGOs to propel the broadbased application of the technology in South Africa and beyond.
