Branching Out of Poverty by Utilizing Forest Biomass

TechnoServe and Montigny Investments will perform a feasibility study and pilot project to produce biomass pellets from forest residue left over from the timber harvesting process. This project will upgrade an obsolete pulp digester to produce a marketable bioenergy product. Developing the forest residue value chain will create more than 500 jobs in the region of Swaziland that has been economically depressed since wildfires devastated the timber industry in 2009. Project activities will focus on examining the technical and economic feasibility, making the required upgrades to the digester, and then mobilize and train forest residue collection groups. The project aims to create jobs and produce a sustainable bioenergy source by adding value to unutilized forest residues.
