Demonstration of an innovative, results-based business model for the rapid and cost-effective installation of decentralized rural energy solutions
Decentralized rural energy solutions such as solar micro-grids, biogas, and PV-based irrigation are critical to the achievement of universal energy access. However, rural energy ventures (REVs) face unique constraints to business growth, including: limited market information, underdeveloped infrastructure, and scarce human capital. These constraints increase the “pre-revenue” costs of site identification, assessment, and project installation, while decreasing investor confidence in rural energy opportunities.
The proposed project will pilot a novel process innovation (“eSquared”) designed to address the constraints of business growth, such as limited market information, underdeveloped infrastructure and scarce human capital. The project proposes to implement two field-based iterations of the model in the context of Devergy micro-grid operations, and publish lessons for broad dissemination. The project will generate new, field-tested operational knowledge supporting the acceleration of global investment into the rural energy sector, and will additionally deliver 900 electricity connections to off-grid communities in Tanzania.
