Iceland increases its contribution to EEP Africa

Helsinki – Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Iceland commits an additional ISK 210,000,000 (approximately EUR 1.45 million) to EEP Africa for the years 2026-2028. This is the second contribution from Iceland, since they joined the Fund in 2022.

EEP Africa’s work to support locally driven solutions to scale up renewable energy aligns closely with Iceland’s Policy for International Development Cooperation, 2024–2028. The renewed commitment supports efforts to enhance climate resilience, promote gender equality, and improve equitable access to clean energy, contributing to long term progress toward reducing energy poverty in the fund’s target countries.

Iceland is proud to continue supporting EEP Africa, a fund that delivers meaningful impact for communities and accelerates the transition to clean and affordable energy. Our renewed commitment reflects Iceland’s strong focus on climate resilience, sustainable energy systems, and the eradication of energy poverty, disproportionately affecting women and girls. By advancing innovative, locally led clean energy solutions, this partnership helps strengthen livelihoods and support a just and inclusive energy transition in Southern and Eastern Africa. The renewed cooperation agreement moreover underscores Iceland’s firm conviction that strong and reliable multilateral partnerships are essential to achieving a clean, fair, and equitable energy future,” said Elín R. Sigurðardóttir, Director General for International Development Cooperation, Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Iceland.

Recommitments from our existing donors provide important validation that EEP Africa is doing right things and has a clear value-adding role in the clean energy ecosystem in Southern and Eastern Africa. We are thankful for Iceland’s continued support and their trust towards EEP Africa delivering on its mandate,” said Jussi Viding, Team Leader for EEP Africa.

The Energy and Environment Partnership Trust Fund (EEP Africa) is a clean energy financing facility hosted and managed by the Nordic Development Fund (NDF) with funding from Austria, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, NDF, Norway, and Switzerland. EEP Africa provides risk tolerant early-stage grant financing for locally driven innovative clean energy projects and businesses in Southern and Eastern Africa. Project financing is supplemented by technical support, investment facilitation and knowledge sharing.
