Powerlive Zimbabwe

Empowerment through Feminist Electrification

This project provided clean, safe and affordable solar energy solutions to women and their communities in Zimbabwe through the distribution of 4,300 modular solar home systems (SHS) through PAYG to rural off-grid households. The modular systems generate 50-80W and can be scaled up to Tier 5 service. In addition, Powerlive distributed over 1,600 productive use appliances such as solar pumps, hair clippers, radios and televisions. Powerlive is a local, woman-led company that aims to empower women by creating employment and improving livelihoods through productive use appliances. Powerlive’s employees are 71% women.

Outcome and Impact

The project has expended operations into 35 districts in Zimbabwe and has provided energy access to over 16,000 people. Powerlive generated annual savings of over EUR 107,000 in energy-related expenditure.
