Mean Sea Level’s Modular Split Momentum design (UK Patent Pending) utilised individual stacked concrete capture units, staggered specifically to work together in optimizing the capture wave power in a common buffer dam. This “overtopping”-type wave energy converter consist of reservoir with a 50m long sloped wall facing the oncoming waves, and will have a height of 5m above mean sea level.
Outcome and Impact:
After 3 years of extensive modeling and wave tank testing, MSL constructed a full scale 1 MW demonstration plant to test their innovation on a full-scale prototype. The 1MW demonstration wave energy converter was built in Western Cape, South Africa. Recognizing the technology’s potential, MSL’s industrial Partner agreed to enter into an off-take agreement for this demonstration plant. Mean Sea Level created 36 direct jobs during the project.
