The project demonstrated a closed loop system using local resources to create thriving communities with access to renewable electricity and healthy food, while improving soil fertility, creating local employment and mitigating climate change. The core of the business was an energy generating Agro-hub in Kyendagara trading centre. Local farmers bring their produce to the Agro-hubs where it is will be sorted, dried and processed. The resulting crop residue is then used as fuel in the Energy-hub to produce electricity, heat and bio-char using biomass gasification technology.
During the project period 562 households gained improved access to off-grid clean energy. This is equivalent to a reduction of 405tCO2eq emissions annually. 13 direct jobs were created.
