Empowering Lake Victoria’s Fishing Communities: The Millennium Engineers Journey

In the heart of Northern Tanzania, Lake Victoria sustains countless lives, with over 100,000 fishermen relying on nighttime sardine fishing to support their families. Yet, despite this vital economic activity, rural electrification remains a challenge. In 2022, only 45.8% of the Tanzanian population had access to electricity, most of which was in urban and mainland areas, leaving fishermen especially those in off-grid areas such as islands, dependent on hazardous and costly kerosene lamps or LED lamps powered by diesel generators. These lighting solutions not only harm the environment but also pose severe health and safety risks, consuming up to 50% of a fisherman’s income.

Enter Millennium Engineers, founded in 2016 by Diana Mbogo, a trailblazer in off-grid energy solutions. With a vision to uplift rural communities through innovative technologies, Millennium Engineers embarked on a mission to revolutionize the fishing industry. Realising that the sector was underserved in the push for renewable energy, Diana and her team focused on addressing the lighting and drying needs of night fishermen.

In 2019, in collaboration with the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), Doen Foundation, Tanzania Rural Electrification (REA), and EEP Africa, Millennium Engineers designed two groundbreaking solutions:

  1. A durable, waterproof floating fishing solar lamps, providing ten hours of light and rechargeable by day. It offered an affordable alternative to kerosene and diesel-powered lamps, transforming the lives of fishermen who could now work safely and save on fuel costs.
  2. An advanced solar drying facility, similar to a greenhouse, that significantly reduced drying time from three days to just a few hours. This innovation not only improved the quality of dried sardines—protecting them from dust and contamination—but also enhanced the profitability of local fishing businesses.

The COVID-19 pandemic briefly halted progress, but Millennium Engineers used the time to refine their products and secure new funding. With support from EEP Africa, the company scaled up its operations, expanding distribution to the Mwanza region and testing new business models. The project, ongoing since 2021, has acquired and availed for leasing 500 solar lamps and two solar drying facilities have been established, with construction in progress for three additional drying facilities.

Today, Millennium Engineers is more than just a start-up—it’s a catalyst for change, proving that sustainable innovation can transform lives. With continued support from EEP Africa and other partners, the company plans to expand across the Lake Victoria region, introducing more renewable energy solutions to the fishing value chain. From solar-powered fishing equipment to electric mobility and cold chain technology, Millennium Engineers is paving the way for a resilient, prosperous future for Tanzania’s fishing communities.

Diana Mbogo’s journey demonstrates how purpose-driven entrepreneurship, backed by strategic support, can create lasting social and economic impact. Millennium Engineers is not just lighting up the night—it’s lighting the way forward for countless communities.
