BioLite

Bridging the home stove to commercial viability in East Africa

The BioLite HomeStove is an ultra-clean, biomass fan cookstove that reduces smoke by 90% and fuel by 50%. The stove also generates electricity from the flame to charge mobile phones and LED lights. This project proposed to launch a credit-enabled, scalable distribution partnership in Uganda and Kenya with Greenlight Planet and Equity Bank. The channel aimed to retail 40,000 HomeStoves by mid-2017 and to develop an operating model for commercial investment.

Outcome and Impact:

During the project period, 25 new members were added to BioLite’s Kenya team, including sales agents, customer care executives, technicians, and key management. BioLite retailed 12,401 HomeStove units over the course of the project to date. They launched and sold over 40,000 solar home systems in East Africa. 54,464 tCO2e were mitigated from operations during project period and 121.7 MWh of energy generated during project period.

Success Story: Kenya has joined Rwanda, as the second nation in the East African community to exempt clean cookstoves from VAT >>
