eThekwini Municipality awarded Ecovate Pty Ltd with a 20 year contract to dispose of 40 000 tons of garden (green) waste per annum, with the possibility of expanding on the annual tonnages to other waste streams that arrive at the landfill sites in the city of Durban.
This project aimed to convert 32,500 tons of dry garden waste (green waste) into biomass and then into electricity, at circa 18 000 MWh’s pa. estimated as 2MW site. Electricity was fed into the national grid and would help to alleviate the pressure on the national grid with the current energy crisis. This reduced the carbon footprint and aids the government in reaching its goals of sourcing green/sustainable energy production. The project also created jobs, which was a priority of the government.
