Midlands Biogas Project

The Midlands Biogas Project (MBP) was a demonstration project of an Induced Blanket Reactor (IBR) anaerobic biogas digester at a dairy farm in the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Midlands, South Africa. The project aimed to demonstrate this innovative technology, applicable to a wide range of small to medium agricultural operations – and secure future investment for further build projects at farm sites. The project also aimed to work with research institutions to ratify the value chains attached to biodigester outputs, specifically the nutrient and monetary value of the digestate fertiliser.

Outcome and Impact:

A gas line was established for delivery of biogas to staff housing at Sunshine Seedlings. (15 houses, 20 – 30 people depending on time of year). The plant was designed for delivery of more than 770 MWh per year assuming a down time of 65 days (18%).
