LEASE-TO-OWN BIOGAS

The project was a pilot of Lease-to-Own Biogas, with the aim to enable smallholder farming families to turn animal waste into clean, healthy and reliable renewable energy for cooking. The farmers would pay for the biogas as they use it and eventually they will have a chance to own the system. This business model was designed to overcome the primary barriers to widespread adoption of biogas in Africa.

Outcome and Impact:

As a result of this project 285 households gained improved access to off-grid clean energy. The project created 13 direct jobs. Over the lifetime of the project a potential 1,995 cumulative t CO2 emission reductions were achieved.
