BRANCHING OUT OF POVERTY BY UTILIZING FOREST BIOMASS

TechnoServe and Montigny Investments performed a feasibility study and pilot project to produce biomass pellets from forest residue from the timber harvesting process. This project will upgrade an obsolete pulp digester to produce a marketable bioenergy product. Developing the forest residue value chain will create more than 500 jobs in the region of Swaziland that has been economically depressed since wildfires devastated the timber industry in 2009. Project activities will focus on examining the technical and economic feasibility, making the required upgrades to the digester, and then mobilize and train forest residue collection groups. The project aims to create jobs and produce a sustainable bioenergy source by adding value to unutilized forest residues.

Outcome and Impact:

500 jobs were to be generated through mobilising community members to collect forest trash. Scope of work changed to wattle and honey production which benefited 237 community members. 200 additional jobs will be created at power plant once construction completed and project has potential to impact 100 000 Ha of small holder wattle producers which is in excess of 15 000 beneficiaries long term.
