Establishing solar lights in Burundi

This project aimed to introduce a new business model for the production and sales of solar lamps in Burundi. The lamps were introduced, developed by the German partner Solux, would be assembled locally, thereby decreasing the cost while maintaining the high quality. The project would not only contribute to the solution of the lighting problem in Burundi but will also create new jobs in ‘green’ economy, bringing new knowledge and technology to the country. The lamps were distributed through a distribution network in 4 provinces during the pilot, offering purchase on credit to households and institutional clients.

 

Outcome and Impact:

During the project period 40 (large) lamps were sold, equivalent to an annual CO2 reduction of 4 ton. An additional 200 lamps were ordered, equivalent to an annual CO2 reduction of 20 tons once sold and in use. 40 households gained access to renewable energy and 8 jobs were created, of which 4 positions were held by women.
