The project was a trial deployment of a fleet of an innovative transportation device, E-Cycles, powered by solar energy. With its storage batteries it is also a micro solar power station for off-grid homes, businesses and communities. The business model targeted the energy poor with a low leasing cost of 50 cents a day thus eliminating barriers to acquisition. The project entailed finalising the design from experience gained from three prototypes, establishing definite sources of supply for parts competitively, selecting operations partners, sites and beneficiaries, developing training materials and monitoring and evaluation strategy and, finally preparing and launching the next deployment phase.
