WOMEN ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT THROUGH BUSINESS INCUBATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP

The project aimed at increasing access to sustainable energy and energy services by women in urban Tanzania. The project selected and tested a mobile biogas digester capable of utilising food waste produced by food venders in the streets of Dar es Salaam who depend solely on charcoal which result into forest depletion. During the project life at least 20 entrepreneurial women groups in urban and suburban areas of Car es Salaam were formally established with sustainable businesses based on renewable energy by February 2017. This went in tandem with supporting these women groups through supporting the Tanzania renewable energy business incubator in initiating the development and testing of a business model to utilize of biogas digestion as a pilot. A total of 200-300 women received direct pre-incubation support via the incubator, with opportunities to become eligible for full incubation support as a next step.

Outcome and Impact:

A total of 7 centres were established, 5 in the market centres of Buguruni, Magomeni, Keko, Kawe, and Temeke Sterio, while 2 centres were opened by the association of street food vendors – outside the market centres.   Each centre has a sales person, records of sales and expenses and a display stall and are able to get supplies of briquettes on credit from the main producer.  In addition there are three other briquette outlets selling briquettes at Mbagala, Keko, and Tandika markets. Potentially cumulative emissions reductions of 5,486 t CO2 achieved over the life time of the project
