The project studied a fish oil to biodiesel concept. Additionally, this project investigated biogas production from unused fishing waste and facility effluents. Energy efficiency measures of significant impact were identified in cooperation with the interested companies, and their profitability studied.
A total of six Namibian fishing companies located in Walvis Bay took part in the project in which a detailed evaluation on several energy related issues was carried out. The evaluation included specific topics of fish waste based biodiesel and biogas production, solar and wind energy, energy storage, potential of local cooperation according to principles of industrial symbiosis and energy efficiency. The project also included a significant training element as part of the communication of the results for the companies. One important outcome of the project was an energy planning tool implemented in MS Excel to help the companies to evaluate the feasibility of different electricity production and storage options specifically for them.
