SCALING-UP ELECTRICITY ACCESS VIA SOLAR HOME SYSTEMS

This project scaled up electricity access via Solar home Systems (SHS) and a commercial sustainable fee-for-service business model in rural Western Uganda. The project aimed to provide 1600 households and businesses with high levels of electricity at affordable monthly prices. For the customer, this meant long-term (> 20 year) maintenance and replacement guarantees for an affordable monthly fee, with no hidden costs. The project grew the customer base to a scale that supports financial sustainable operations.

Outcome and Impact:

FRES Uganda focused on SHS installations and continuous sensitisation and awareness campaigns in villages. In 2015 the company was able to install 421 system; in 2016, 1,119 customers were installed and in 2017, 330 customers received their solar home systems, representing 100% of the EEP customer target of 1870 customers. FRES Uganda is able to generate 792.5MWh with 1870 solar home systems in the 2 and a half years.
