PowerGen Renewable Energy East Africa

Beyond lighting: ac solar micro-grids for rural Kenya and Tanzania

PowerGen aimed to install 110 AC micro-grids between 3 and 6 kW each in off-grid communities of Kenya and Tanzania. AC micro-grids provide customers with power for productive loads to expand their businesses. Mobile money enabled metering technology allows PowerGen to monitor each grid remotely, significantly reducing operational overhead.

Outcome and Impact:

PowerGen installed 18 solar micro-grids with a combined capacity of 82kW. PowerGen expects these 18 grids to displace 1246 tons of CO2 annually. PowerGen built and installed 5 solar micro-grids by the end of Q4 2017 – connecting 932 households/SMEs/institutions and providing a sum total of 108kW of installed solar generation capacity. 57 direct jobs were created.
